Purpose

We all have a big purpose for being here on earth at this current point in time. This purpose was decided by our soul before we incarnated so the more in tune we are with our soul, the more likely we are to discover this purpose. But apart from that, we all have many little purposes in our lives; opportunities to express love, gratitude, acceptance, forgiveness and compassion and also material help if it is within our means to do so. And not only do we have to learn to give without reservation or expectation of return but we also have to learn to accept what is given to us without feeling that we are in debt to the giver. This is a hard lesson to learn for many people (including myself). My father would never accept a favour from anyone because he considered that by doing so he was at a disadvantage until he had repaid the favour. Although I adopted this belief myself for a considerable part of my life, I now know how terribly wrong this was. It is really a selfish outlook because by refusing gifts and/or help from others we are denying them the satisfaction of giving to us. Many (if not all) of the people we encounter in this lifetime, we have known in past lives as well. And when we feel a strong desire to help certain individuals it may well be that we have received something from them in another lifetime and were unable to reciprocate at that time. Or we may have done wrong to that person and feel a desire to make atonement now that we are in a position to do so. And likewise when others do something for us, it may be that we have done a lot for them in another lifetime. Some people even choose to come into this lifetime purely as a sacrifice to help another soul to learn important lessons to further their spiritual growth. So we shouldn’t keep track of who owes who favours, in fact it is detrimental to our spiritual progress to do so. Learning to give freely to others and receive with gratitude is all that is necessary.
